HAT Ranch System

The HAT Ranch’s basis of the breeding system is to cross the two breeds of Angus and Tarentaise in rotation to produce a uniform set of females that not only provide maternal and reproductive opportunities, but are moderate in size and yet produce a steer required for the feed lot. 

 

GENETICS—The HAT Ranch System uses Angus cows as its base unit to supply good mothering ability plus marbling.  The Tarentaise breed is used in rotation to improve milk, speed maturity, and to add muscle to the breed.  It is important to understand that our system can work on any breed of cow herd.  A transitional program is developed with the goal being to achieve the base cowherd to support the HAT Ranch Breeding System.

 

HEALTH—The HAT Ranch System focuses on 3 main principles:  Preventing the introduction of disease, minimizing the exposure to disease, increasing immunity.  By doing this, we establish biosecurity and biocontainment for our breeding program.  We utilize Bovi-Shield FP to prevent the spread of Persistent Infection of BVD (PI) calves.  We ask our members to do the same.  This allows us to fully utilize the WeanVAC program and co-mingle HAT Ranch cattle into feedlots from multiple owners  For more information on the Pfizer programs, visit www.pfizerah.com or www.selectvac.com.

 

NUTRITION—Proper nutrition allows all animals to reach their full potential.  The HAT Ranch  collects carcass dates on all herd sires used within the system to substantiate the benefits of proper nutrition.  Through our consulting services, all producers have the ability to wean healthy calves and see our well-know rate of gains.

We have proven that calves fed the Accuration feeding program from Purina will have the most optimal performance on the ranch.  This program allows our system cattle to express their genetic potential for feed efficiency and marbling.  We believe that you should not let calves consume more than 1% of their body weight in creep feed.  Our data shows that excessive gains on grass leads to reduced performance in the feedlot.  To learn more, visit www.purina.com.
